SCOTTY MOORE: Scotty Moore passed away on the 28th of June at his home outside Nashville.

Elvis wouldn't have been the same without Scotty Moore, who has passed away at the age of 84. Scotty's playing on those early songs was the inspiration for thousands of youngsters to start out on guitar......MK

Among many other tributes:

Scotty was the man who first inspired me to play guitar. He was a man of great integrity and, unlike others, never bad-mouthed Elvis after he died.... Steve Phillips

Sad to hear about Scotty Moore ... who started it all pretty much. An absolute privilege to have known and worked with him. A lovely man, a gentleman in every sense and a true hero. ...Ed Bicknell

Very sad to hear about Scotty… a real guitar hero. I remember meeting him, only a few years ago, at an event at the Country Music Hall of Fame. I shook his hand and was literally speechless, the only thing I could manage was to thank him for all the good music. That was enough....Richard Bennett

BRIAN BENNETT ALBUM: Long-time Shadows drummer Brian Bennett is to release an album of film music by British composer John Barry. Among the guest artists on the album, Mark plays on All The Time In The World, a song from the soundtrack of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service with Hal David lyrics which became a huge hit for jazz great Louis Armstrong. You can listen to the song (track 9) on the Brian Bennett Orchestra's Shadowing John Barry on Spotify.

Mark, a lifelong Shadows fan, says that All The Time In The World “was one of Barry's personal favourites. It was such a thrill to be asked to contribute to this version by Brian, one of my all-time favourite great drummers and a fine composer and arranger himself. To find myself playing a wonderful John Barry composition with Brian Bennett on drums was an unforgettable experience,” Mark adds, “For guitar aficionados, I dropped my usual style for this recording and used an old Fender Stratocaster with heavy gauge strings, playing it with a pick instead of my fingers and using the tremolo arm on the instrument to create vibrato rather than my neck hand.”

BRENDAN HEALY: Brendan Healy, the great North-East comedian, actor and musician who passed away on Thursday evening, was a much loved figure who will be missed by countless thousands on Tyneside and beyond. DS THE STUDIO ALBUMS: Formed in 1977 Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, were one of the iconic groups of the late 20th Century. When they first appeared on the London live circuit, their timeless music, faultless musicianship and memorable songs quickly connected with music lovers. From the start, it was clear that Dire Straits would set their own path and while the then-current zeitgeist of new wave showed there was an appetite for the new, Dire Straits proved that classic song writing would never go out of fashion.

Working hard touring, writing and recording, they released a series of ever more successful albums and by 1985 they were the biggest selling band in the world. Dire Straits’ appeal was almost instantly universal. They travelled the globe building an enormous and loyal international following. Their keynote songs, such as Sultans Of Swing, Romeo And Juliet and Money For Nothing dominated the airwaves in the 80s and the revolutionary new music TV channels such as MTV propelled the songs to become international standards. They remain one of the most played bands on radio to this day.

Scheduled for release from the 25th of November, THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978 – 1991 brings together all six of the band’s studio albums.

All albums have been re-mastered for vinyl by Bob Ludwig, cut at Bernie Grundman’s and pressed at Pallas, Germany on beautiful 180gm vinyl. The CD running order with full length versions of the tracks have been restored to Brothers In Arms, now presented as a 2xLP set, as well as a double vinyl of On Every Street. In conjunction with Amnesty International,
Mark has issued the following letter:

Dear Masha and Nadia,

As the one-year anniversary of your trial approaches, I’m writing to assure you that, around the world, people are both still thinking of you and working for your release.Although you were the most visible of the protesters, we know also that there were many other young people who have suffered in the protests, about whom we are also very concerned. But, in many ways, through your imprisonment, you have come to represent them .

Many artists voiced their concern when these ... charges were first brought against you, we had every hope that the authorities, in dealing with you ,would show some understanding , a sense of proportion, even some of the wonderful Russian sense of humour, but none of the above were forthcoming .

The impact of your shockingly unjust trial and imprisonment has spread far and wide. Especially among your fellow artists, musicians and citizens around the world, including the many parents who feel your anguish at being separated from your children. While understanding the sensitivities of protesting in a place of worship, we ask that the Russian authorities review these harsh sentences, so that you may return to your children, your families and your lives.

The right to freedom of expression and dissent is a legitimate one and essential in any kind of democracy. You have been accused of what could be described as 'a victimless' crime, but in our opinion, in a just society, there can be no crime where there is no identifiable 'victim'.

Your strength, bravery and fearlessness are an inspiration to us all.

Yours in solidarity,
Mark Knopfler

No1 DRIVING SONG: Sultans of Swing has hit the No1 spot in a survey of driving songs undertaken by Auto Trader. The No2 and No3 spots went to the Queen classics We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust. Nathan Coe, Group Director Auto Trader, said: “We all have a favourite driving song and it’s interesting to note that although Auto Trader’s customers are from all age groups it is the hits from the 1970s, with four out of the top six, that dominate with only one recent hit [Adele's Rolling in the Deep] making it into the top ten. Maybe they just don’t make them like they used to anymore.”

The survey also revealed that 76% of motorists turned up the volume when their favourite driving song came on the radio, 60% sang along (but only if by themselves in the car) and 38% used the steering wheel as a drum. Worryingly, 7% said they ‘jigged about’ to the song, 2% played air guitar and 1% sang into an imaginary microphone!

GEORGE JONES: George Jones, whose supple Texas voice conveyed heartbreak so profound that he became perhaps the most imitated singer in country music, died on the 26th of April. He was 81.

Jones gave country music its ultimate voice. With recordings that spanned 50 years, including No. 1 singles White Lightning, She Thinks I Still Care and He Stopped Loving Her Today, Jones influenced generations of country singers and was considered by many to be the greatest of them all.

"George Jones will be missed by everyone who truly loves songs. He had a voice that could express the full range of human emotion, from delight to despair. He was one of the giants."
