To find myself playing a wonderful John Barry composition with Brian Bennett on drums was an unforgettable experience,” Mark adds, “For guitar aficionados, I dropped my usual style for this recording and used an old Fender Stratocaster with heavy gauge strings, playing it with a pick instead of my fingers and using the tremolo arm on the instrument to create vibrato rather than my neck hand.”

DS THE STUDIO ALBUMS: Formed in 1977 Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, were one of the iconic groups of the late 20th Century. When they first appeared on the London live circuit, their timeless music, faultless musicianship and memorable songs quickly connected with music lovers. From the start, it was clear that Dire Straits would set their own path and while the then-current zeitgeist of new wave showed there was an appetite for the new, Dire Straits proved that classic song writing would never go out of fashion.
Working hard touring, writing and recording, they released a series of ever more successful albums and by 1985 they were the biggest selling band in the world. Dire Straits’ appeal was almost instantly universal. They travelled the globe building an enormous and loyal international following. Their keynote songs, such as Sultans Of Swing, Romeo And Juliet and Money For Nothing dominated the airwaves in the 80s and the revolutionary new music TV channels such as MTV propelled the songs to become international standards. They remain one of the most played bands on radio to this day.
Scheduled for release from the 25th of November, THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978 – 1991 brings together all six of the band’s studio albums.
· DIRE STRAITS (1978)
· COMMUNIQUE (1979)
· MAKING MOVIES (1980)
· LOVE OVER GOLD (1982)
· BROTHERS IN ARMS (1985)
· ON EVERY STREET (1991)

PUSSYRIOT ANNIVERSARY, MARK'S LETTER:
|..................click pic for larger image|
with Amnesty International,
Mark has issued the following letter:
|Dear Masha and Nadia,
As the one-year anniversary of your trial approaches, I’m writing to assure you that, around the world, people are both still thinking of you and working for your release.Although you were the most visible of the protesters, we know also that there were many other young people who have suffered in the protests, about whom we are also very concerned. But, in many ways, through your imprisonment, you have come to represent them .
Many artists voiced their concern when these ... charges were first
brought against you, we had every hope that the authorities, in dealing
with you ,would show some understanding , a sense of proportion, even
some of the wonderful Russian sense of humour, but none of the above
were forthcoming .

DRIVING SONG: Sultans of Swing has hit the No1 spot
in a survey of driving songs undertaken by Auto Trader. The No2 and No3 spots
went to the Queen classics We Will Rock You and Another One Bites
the Dust. Nathan Coe, Group Director Auto Trader, said: “We all
have a favourite driving song and it’s interesting to note that although
Auto Trader’s customers are from all age groups it is the hits from
the 1970s, with four out of the top six, that dominate with only one recent
hit [Adele's Rolling in the Deep] making it into the top ten. Maybe
they just don’t make them like they used to anymore.”
The survey also revealed that 76% of motorists turned up the volume when their favourite driving song came on the radio, 60% sang along (but only if by themselves in the car) and 38% used the steering wheel as a drum. Worryingly, 7% said they ‘jigged about’ to the song, 2% played air guitar and 1% sang into an imaginary microphone!
