Mark is to write the music for a new film called Private Peaceful which is scheduled for release in January, 2012. The film is based on the book of the same title by Michael Morpurgo. Set in rural Devon in the years leading up to and including the First World War, it tells the story of Tommo Peaceful from boyhood to the trenches of the Western Front.

The Old Grey Whistle Test

This year sees the 40th anniversary of the Old Grey Whistle Test. The OGWT was launched in 1971 and until 1998 it was the flagship BBC music prgramme. "It gave the first British exposure to music greats such as Bob Marley, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Steely Dan and Billy Joel." To mark its 40th anniversary, various artistes will be featured in a series of programmes on BBC Radio 2. An interview with Mark is scheduled to be aired at 10 pm on the 5th of October.

Mark and Bob Dylan autumn tour

In a coming together of two of the greatest living songwriters, it was announced today that Mark Knopfler and his band would be joining Bob Dylan for a series of shows around England and Europe this autumn.

Both artists will be taking a coterie of their own musicians and as usual Mark has assembled a group of players who are the best in their field. The band will consist of Richard Bennett on guitar, Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Jim Cox on piano, John McCusker on violin and cittern, Mike McGoldrick on flute, whistle and pipes, Glenn Worf on bass and Ian Thomas on drums.

Mark has taken a break from recording his next album in order to participate in what is likely to be the must see show of the year. Mark's association with Dylan dates back to 1979 when he played with Bob on the Slow Train Coming Sessions and then produced the acclaimed 1983 release Infidels.

Mark says - I'm much looking forward to going out on the road with Bob in such a special year. Also, it was an honour to be asked to record one of Bob's songs on the forthcoming Amnesty International 50th anniversary album to mark his 70th birthday.

Private charity gig

On the 19th of May Mark, Guy, Luke Brighty, John McCusker and Danny Thompson, played a special charity gig before an invited audience at Corinthia Hotel, London. The event was in aid of The Gender Rights and Equality Action Trust (GREAT). Songs played were Sailing To Philadelphia, Romeo and Juliet, Get Lucky, Song For Sonny Liston, Marbletown, and Local Hero. GREAT aims to foster gender equality and raise awareness and funds to support grass roots gender equality projects in Africa and beyond. Among the highlights of the evening was the auction of an MK Strat which sold for a very impressive 75,000 GBP.

Alan, Chris and Phil, will be playing many of Dire Straits greatest hits in this not to be missed special event. This is a one off gig in aid of The Lords Taverners.

The Lords Taverners is the official Charity of recreational cricket and the leading youth cricket and sports charity in the UK which focuses on youth cricket in disadvantaged areas as well as offering sports and recreational equipment for young people with disabilities and special needs.

Bonhams auction

On behalf of the PRS, London auction house, Bonhams of Knightsbridge, is holding an auction of original, hand-written song lyrics donated by vaious artists. The auction is to take place on the 15th of December and proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Among the lots to be sold is Lot No 372 - an autographed guitars print, number 408 from an edition of 500, framed, mounted and labelled, with the first two lines of the chorus of Get Lucky hand-written by Mark in black ink.

New honours for Mark

Mark is to become an honourary Vice-President of the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust. Chairman of the Trust, Malcolm Dix, said "I had an exchange of text messages with Mark and I was delighted when he agreed to lend his name to the work we are doing to restore the Tyne Theatre and Opera House to its former glory."

Mark is also to receive the ARPS Sound Fellowship which is bestowed on individuals who have made a "significant contribution to the art, science or business of sound recording".

John Illsley - UK tour postponed

John has been forced to postpone his forthcoming Streets Of Heaven UK tour due to continuing problems with his right hand which have left him unable to play for sustained periods of time.

Following a series of injections to get him through his May dates, John had an operation to relieve Carpal Tunnel syndrome in his right hand at the end of May.

Although the operation was a success, his hand is still too swollen and bruised to play for any length of time. So, reluctantly and under medical advice, it has been decided to postpone the tour now to give enough notice for fans to cancel any arrangements they may have made.

John apologises to anyone who has been disappointed or inconvenienced and will reschedule the dates as soon as he is able.

Mark and John Illsley will be attending a short ceremony in Deptford on Thursday 3rd December to unveil a blue plaque on the site of the first Dire Straits performance. The award, presented by the PRS for music, is part of a national campaign to highlight areas where significant musical events have taken place. The plaque will be fixed to Farrer House in Church Street, Deptford, and unveiled at 11.30am.

It will be released as a digital single on the 9th of November and proceeds from the single will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Day Appeal. This is a U.K. charity providing support to the serving and ex-service community and their dependents. Proceeds from the US release will go to a similar charity in the USA.

Reissue of John Illsley albums

In the 1980s John Illsley released two solo albums, Glass and Never Told A Soul. Consisting of all original Illsley compositions, the albums featured some eminent guest performers. Mark played guitar on much of both records, as did Jerry Donahue. Both Guy Fletcher and Alan Clark lent their hands to the keyboard parts and Chris White guested on sax.

The two CDs are being re-issued on with the original artwork on the Creek Records label on September 7th. Comprising 16 tracks between them, the full track listing for both CDs is as follows ...

Glass ... High Stakes, I Want To See The Moon, Papermen, All I Want Is You , The World Is Made Of Glass, Red Turns To Blue, Let's Dance, She Wants Everything, Star For Now.

Alchemy 5.1 DVD

Chuck Ainlay recently remixed the original tapes which formed the Alchemy album. The film is currently being digitally enhanced and a 5.1 and blue-ray version of the concert will be released next year. The approximate release date would be in April 2010 but this is not confirmed and retail will not be aware of this release as yet. A single from the album, Secret Garden, will be released on the 6th of October. John and Greg will be undertaking a short UK tour early in 2009. Photography and Recording Policy - new update, 15/04/08

There are increasing numbers of fans filming the show. Everybody should be able to enjoy the concert without interference from others. It is beginning to get too distracting for the band and irritating too many people in the audience.

Please note that starting with immediate effect, cameras/equipment used for recording moving pictures (DVD/video/cine, etc), e.g video/DVD/film cameras, will not be permitted in any part of the venue. Single shot cameras and audio are still okay but please be mindful of your fellow fans.

Standard 35mm film or digital cameras, including SLRs with lenses less than 75mm and compact point-and-shoot models, are allowed provided they do not obstruct the view of other fans. Professional cameras or other equipment, including tripods, are not allowed unless the user has the appropriate working media credential. Personal photography or video may not be used to reproduce the concert for commercial purposes.

Please note that this camera policy is subject to change for any event based on the requests of the venue or promoters. Where an individual venue does not permit any type of recording/photographic equipment (including audio, SLRs, digital compacts, etc) then the policy of that venue will be respected. In cases where the venue says they bow to the policy of the artist, it is recommended that you take a printout of this policy with you on the night of the concert.

The first KTGC tour date to be announced for the US is the 24th of June when Mark will perform at the Red Rocks Ampitheater in Morrison, Colorado. The mk.com presale begins Tuesday, February 12 at 10:00 MST. More N America dates to follow so be sure to check the tour dates page regularly over the coming weeks.

People buying tickets online for the North America shows will get a free KTGC CD with every two tickets for the same show purchased. It does not matter if the tickets are purchased from mk.com or another online ticket outlet. The CD will come to you directly via Warner Brothers in the US and through MarkKnopfler.com for all other regions. You will receive an email from your chosen ticket seller following your purchase giving complete information on receiving your free CD.

Friday 5th of October Mark performed an intimate showcase in London before a select audience of around 80 people. Songs were interspersed with short Q & A sessions with BBC Radio presenter Simon Mayo. The showacse was recorded for BBC Radio 2 and will be broadcast on the 19th of November. The songs played were Donegan's Gone/Rudiger/True Love Will Never Fade/The Fizzy and the Still/Let It All Go/Going Home/Postcards From Paraguay/Brothers In Arms/Our Shangri-La/So Far Away.

Seeing in the Dark

Mark and Guy have collaborated to produce the music for a major TV documentary called "Seeing In The Dark" to be aired by PBS in N America on Wednesday the 19th September (check local listing for times, etc). The hour-long film is the work of award-winning journalist and film-maker Timothy Ferris. Based upon Ferris' best-selling book, it charts the rise and success of amateur astronomers. True Love Will Never Fade is to be the first single released from the forth-coming Kill To Get Crimson album. To be released as a digital download on the 24th of September in the UK and much of the rest of Europe, the single will also be available as a 7" vinyl in the UK (although this is subject to change). In the USA and Canada there will be a different single release, Punish The Monkey. The release date for the USA/Canada single is yet to be announced.
